Design and Ergonomics of VRNRGY Power Pack
Since its release a
few months ago, the Oculus Quest has been a great success. Indeed, this
standalone VR headset offers many possibilities, and above all, more freedom
than other devices. No cables or computer required, the Quest is
self-sufficient. This also means that it runs on a battery. However, the user
can quickly become frustrated if he is forced to interrupt his game or any
video in the middle. There are practical and affordable solutions to prevent
this from happening. We test one of them here : the VRNRGY Power Pack.
Design and ergonomics of the Power
Pack
The VRNRGY Power Pack
is very compact. It attaches to the back of the Oculus Quest, on the flexible
headband that holds the headset on the head. Delivered with its own straps, the
handling to attach it is very quick, even if the brief instructions are only in
English. The cable that connects the battery to the HMD is the right size so it
doesn't get in the way. It also knows how to be discreet so as not to disturb
the general aesthetics, even if this is really not the most important thing.
The attachment straps
are made of breathable neoprene. The Power Pack is not in direct contact with
the skull since a cover, an integral part of the straps, makes the interface
between the two. Thus, this addition to the helmet is not disturbing, even
after long RV sessions. The weight of the battery is counterbalanced, or rather
counterbalances that of the helmet. Overall the comfort level is good and
wearing this add-on pack is not unpleasant. We particularly appreciate the
practicality of the straps and the design that integrates directly into the
Oculus Quest without any special DIY.
On the back of the
Power Pack are the two USB inputs for charging and connection to the helmet. In
addition, a row of four blue LEDs provides information on the battery charge
status.
Summary
The Oculus Quest's
autonomy is one of the main headset issue and it can quickly become
frustrating. That's why the addition of an external battery is recommended, if
not necessary. Of course it is possible to buy a regular product and tinker
with something yourself. However, you can expect a wobbly and impractical
result. The big advantage of the VRNRGY Power Pack and its configuration
studied for the Quest. It integrates easily and even provides an increased
comfort to the overall experience. With a good quality/price ratio, this
accessory is indispensable for the inveterate VR gamer.
